Resonant transport of fusion alpha particles in quasisymmetric stellarators

چکیده

Abstract In modern, highly optimized stellarator configurations where prompt fusion alpha particle losses from the plasma core are absent, particles can still be lost due to stochastic orbits which result in delayed losses. One mechanism leading changes trapping class during drift motion along contours of parallel adiabatic invariant J ∥ jumps when crossing boundaries. Another mechanism, is main interest here, resonance between and bounce (drift-orbit resonance). The first affects mainly trapped near trapped-passing boundary phase space quasi-symmetric quasi-isodynamic devices, minimized there by aligning local magnetic field maxima on a given flux surface. second may affect broader range domain remain closed. ESTIMATION OF RADIATION LOSS FROM STELLARATORS USING NEOCLASSICAL TRANSPORT THEORY

The radiation power loss from a magnetically confined plasma in a stellarator has been calculated using neoclassical particle and energy fluxes in an energy balance equation. We could obtain a power loss of about 34% of the total input power by numerical calculation. This fraction of the power loss has been found to be in good agreement with the experimentally measured values of 30-40% for...

Effect of superbanana diffusion on fusion reactivity in stellarators

Fusion reactivity is usually obtained using a Maxwellian distribution. However, energy-dependent radial diffusion can modify the energy distribution. Superbanana diffusion is energy-dependent and occurs in nonaxisymmetric magnetic confinement devices, such as stellarators, because of rippletrapped particles which can take large steps between collisions. In this paper, the D-T fusion reactivity ...

Microturbulent Transport of Non-maxwellian Alpha Particles

Title of dissertation: MICROTURBULENT TRANSPORT OF NON-MAXWELLIAN ALPHA PARTICLES George John Wilkie, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Professor William Dorland Department of Physics A burning Deuterium-Tritium plasma is one which depends upon fusion-produced alpha particles for self-heating. Whether a plasma can reach a burning state requires knowledge of the transport of a...

Neoclassical Transport in Quasi-Axially Symmetric Stellarators

We present a numerical and analytic assessment of the transport in two quasi-axially symmetric stellarators, including one variant of the MHH2 class[l] of such devices, and a configuration we refer t o as NHH2, closely related t o MHH2. Monte Carlo simulation results are compared with expectations from established stellarator neoclassical theory, and with some empirical stellarator scalings, us...

Optimizing stellarators for turbulent transport.

Up to now, the term "transport-optimized" stellarators has meant optimized to minimize neoclassical transport, while the task of also mitigating turbulent transport, usually the dominant transport channel in such designs, has not been addressed, due to the complexity of plasma turbulence in stellarators. Here, we demonstrate that stellarators can also be designed to mitigate their turbulent tra...
